Bleaching from Chlorine
Bleaching is another negative effect and telltale sign of chlorine damage. The combined effects of chlorine and alkaline pH (link) cause the cuticle to raise and expose the melanocytes, or hair pigments, that give hair it's color. The raised cuticle allows the chlorine direct access to penetrate the cortex (inner shaft of the hair strand where the color pigments are located) and bleach the hair.
