The poolHead story

As a scientist, Dr. Katharine Presty knew that regular exposure to chlorine could damage hair. As mom to a nationally ranked diver with a beautiful head of fanny-length black hair, Dr. Presty was frustrated when she could find no products that would protect her daughter from the dreaded chlorine-induced “pool head.” It’s not that there weren’t any products. It’s just that she was sure none of them would work — or ever could work.

“The only products out there claimed to treat the effects of chlorine,” Dr. Presty says. “But I knew that didn’t make sense, because once the hair is damaged, it’s too late. Nothing you do to the hair after chlorine has affected it can fix it. The damage has been done.”

Dr. Presty decided she’d just come up with the solution herself. Presty immersed herself in every piece of research she could find about external effects on skin and hair, and on pool chemistry. She also began with a unique premise: protecting the hair meant just that — preventing it from becoming damaged in the first place. Using her findings, she developed a prototype. Then she enlisted an award-winning cosmetic chemist to refine the product. The result was poolHead Products.
