Green Hair: Use of Elemental Copper as Algaecide
Elemental copper is used to treat pools to rid algae (link). In older pools, copper can also leach from old pipes. Unfortunately, the copper from either source is responsible for turning hair different colors , especially green in blonds. Brunettes and darker hair change color also, it's just not as noticeable. Color treated hair is prone to fading and color change as well.
Chelators (pronounced KEE- LAY- TORS) are substances that bind to heavy metals, such as copper, and are rinsed away. Some include EDTA and citric acid. Chelators will eliminate green hair, but only if present in sufficient quantity.
